The landscape of media-based worker cooperatives in Asia Pacific is both varied and unique. But there is still scope and potential for this movement to kick-off, as many of the known examples are from the pre-globalization era. With the abundance of talent more such cooperatives need to be established in various media streams, motivated from successful cases of individuals rallying together to converge their talents, interests, ideas and goals, for mutual enterprise and cooperation.

In 2017, three students at the KU Leuven in Belgium carried out research on the way in which cooperatives are portrayed in the media.  This is an original subject and whilst it was addressed at a local level, the outcome of the research is positive for the entire cooperative movement.  

The 2018 edition of the Social Cooperatives International School (SCIS) closed its doors on Sunday 28 October in Naples (Italy), after three full days of sessions, workshops, study visits but also fun and relaxing moments.

Under the slogan “Cooperativism at the hour of global challenges”, the 1,500 participants of the “V Cooperative Summit of the Americas”have been building agreements for three days, gathered in a final document called the “Declaration of Buenos Aires”.

If we look at the whole sectoral evolution inside our movement in recent  last years, the two CICOPA Global Reports, reported a 27% increase in the number of enterprises active in this field in recent years.

Co-operatives of the Americas and The Co-operative Confederation of the Argentine Republic (Cooperar), together with the member organizations of the International Co-operative Alliance in Argentina, invite you to take part in the V Co-operative Summit of the Americas, “Co-operatives at a time of global challenges”, which will take place in the city of Buenos Aires between October 23 and 26, 2018.

CICOPA joins its member USFWC – the U.S. Federation of Worker Cooperatives – in celebrating the first employee ownership-focused law in more than twenty years and applauding this “bipartisan effort to improve small business loans and outreach for employee ownership”. 

Diana Dovgan, CICOPA Secretary General, and Hyungsik Eum, CICOPA’s Data Analyst, took part in the conference “Future of Work and Worker Cooperatives” in South Korea, on July 12 and 13, organized by our member, Korean Federation of Worker Cooperatives (KFWC).

On 7 July 2018, cooperators around the world will celebrate the International Day of Cooperatives with a slogan: “Sustainable societies through cooperation”. But what makes cooperatives a valuable ally towards a green, sustainable and competitive economy?

Luc Audebrand is a professor at Laval University (Quebec City). His research focuses on managing tensions in worker coops and, in this paper called “Expanding the scope of paradox scholarship on social enterprise: the case for (re)introducing worker cooperatives”, he describes the main tensions in worker coops and ways to deal with these tensions.

CICOPA is pleased to announce it has concluded a contract with the Government of Singapore to conduct an 8-month study entitled “Strategy for developing and promoting worker and social cooperatives in Singapore”. 

CICOPA is pleased to announce the membership of FEDECABA, the Federation of Self-Managed Cooperatives of Buenos Aires for Another Economy.

On 7 July 2018, cooperators around the world will celebrate the International Day of Cooperatives. Through the slogan “Sustainable societies through cooperation” we will show how, thanks to our values, principles and governance structures, cooperatives have sustainability and resilience at their core, with concern for community as the seventh of their guiding principles.

With new tools and political policies now in place to support them, there could be a boom in employee-owned business ahead as baby boomers retire and sell their companies to their workers.

CICOPA, on a close collaboration with the ICA Asia-Pacific, will launch in May 2018 a joint research initiative on “Exploring Work & Ownership in Cooperatives”. The research main objective is to better understand the diversity of cooperative models in the industry and service sector for the Asia-Pacific region. The initiative is now launching a call for partners, and CICOPA would like to invite its members from the Asia-Pacific region to participate.
