G20 DWG Side Event: Strengthening the Role of Cooperatives in achieving the targets of SDGs and Economic Democracy
14 June 2022
On the 26th of May 2022, the G20 Development Working Group (DWG) organized the international seminar “G20 DWG Side Event: Strengthening the Role of Cooperatives in achieving the targets of SDGs and Economic Democracy”. Cooperatives from Africa, Asia, and Europe were invited to showcase how they are reducing poverty and inequalities, building resilience, dealing with digital transformations, and financing development.
Iñigo Albizuri Landazabal, the President of CICOPA, in his presentation highlighted the main principles of governance in the cooperative model. He contrasted the “greed distribution”, that is being promoted by the for-profit model, with the “right distribution” promoted by cooperatives. Finally, he insisted on the importance of support from the public sector to the cooperative movement.
CECOP (CICOPA Europe) was also represented at the event by its President, Giuseppe Guerini. His intervention was centered on cooperatives’ role in digital democracy and financing for development. Giuseppe Guerini highlighted key initiatives carried out by cooperatives to accelerate sustainable development and digital transformation in their communities.
CECOP & CICOPA welcome the G20 DWG’s interest in the solutions provided by the cooperative movement to answer the challenges linked to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
